Magento → BigCommerce

Move off Magento without sacrificing what you've built.

Magento migrations are the most complex replatforms in ecommerce: attribute sets, layered navigation, multi-website setups, and extension stacks that took years to build. We've handled this many times. Your data migrates cleanly, your SEO equity carries over, and every extension gets mapped to a BigCommerce equivalent or rebuilt.

The Magento problem

Magento's power comes with a steep total cost of ownership.

Magento and Adobe Commerce are powerful platforms, but running and maintaining them gets expensive. The common tipping points:

  • Magento 1 EOL. M1 has been end-of-life since June 2020. Every month on M1 is a security liability.
  • M2 upgrade cost. Major Magento 2 upgrades frequently require rebuilding customizations from scratch. The cost can rival a full replatform.
  • Hosting and DevOps overhead. Magento requires dedicated infrastructure. BC is SaaS, so that overhead disappears.
  • B2B feature parity. BC B2B Edition covers B2B features that Magento B2B requires expensive customization for.

Why BigCommerce

Moving off Magento also means moving to a radically lower total cost of ownership.

BigCommerce is SaaS, hosted and maintained by BigCommerce. No server contracts, no DevOps overhead, no upgrade cycles that cost as much as the original build. As a Certified BigCommerce Partner, we've run this comparison many times. The cost difference is substantial.

Infrastructure is included

Magento requires managed hosting, Redis, Elasticsearch, and a DevOps layer. BigCommerce is fully hosted: hosting, uptime, security patches, and PCI compliance all included.

Upgrades happen in the background

Magento major version upgrades frequently require rebuilding customizations from scratch. BC upgrades automatically in the background, with no rebuild cycles and no surprise invoices.

Native B2B Edition

Shared catalogs, company accounts, price lists, quote workflows, requisition lists, NET terms: all native in BC B2B Edition, not a pile of expensive Magento extensions.

API-first architecture

BC's REST and GraphQL APIs are first-class. ERPs, PIMs, and headless storefronts connect cleanly — without Magento's PHP stack underneath every integration.

Everything we do on BigCommerce

Extension & Dependency Audit

Every Magento extension reviewed for functional equivalency in BC — native feature, BC app, or custom build. Gaps surfaced before the project starts, not during it.

  • Extension inventory
  • BC equivalency map
  • Gap analysis
  • Fixed scope

Data & Schema Translation

Magento's data model (attribute sets, configurable products, multi-website setups) is different from BC's. We handle the full schema translation, not a raw CSV dump-and-import.

  • Attribute mapping
  • Product types
  • Multi-website
  • Customer data

B2B Feature Mapping

Magento B2B features mapped to BC B2B Edition — shared catalogs, company accounts, quote workflows, requisition lists, NET terms, and sales-rep access.

  • Shared catalog
  • Company accounts
  • Quote workflows
  • NET terms

SEO & Launch Preservation

Magento URL patterns are complex — category paths, layered navigation, multi-site domains. Full redirect map built and validated before any cutover.

  • URL audit
  • Redirect map
  • Canonical structure
  • GSC monitoring

Frequently asked questions

We're still on Magento 1. Is it too late to migrate?

Not too late, but every month on M1 is a security risk. M1 has been end-of-life since June 2020. We have successfully migrated M1 stores — they require more cleanup than M2 migrations but are entirely doable.

Will we lose our SEO equity from years on Magento?

Not if the migration is properly planned. Magento's layered navigation URLs are the biggest risk — we handle the redirect map for filtered URLs, faceted paths, and multi-website domains before you go live.

Our Magento store has 30+ extensions. What happens to them?

We audit every extension during discovery and map each to a BC equivalent or flag it as a custom build. We will not commit to a project scope until we know every extension is accounted for.

Can BigCommerce handle multi-website / multi-brand Magento setups?

Yes. BC Multi-Storefront covers multi-brand setups on a single platform. Each storefront has its own domain, theme, and catalog — a direct equivalent to Magento's multi-website architecture.
