You can finally measure AI search visibility. Here's how.

For two years, "how often does AI cite us?" required manual spot-checks and third-party guesswork. In June 2026, Google shipped native reporting on the search side, while its shopping-side Merchant Center report began rolling out in pilot. This guide covers what each report shows and what to do with the numbers.

Watch: AI search vs classic SEO in 60 seconds

The shift this guide covers, compressed: what changes when buyers ask AI instead of searching.

AI SEO vs old SEO — the shift for ecommerce owners

Can you measure AI search visibility directly now?

Yes. As of June 2026, Search Console has dedicated performance reports for generative-AI features — impressions and visibility within AI Overviews and AI Mode on Search, plus generative AI in Discover. Merchant Center is adding a parallel AI performance report for product visibility across AI shopping experiences. Both are first-party data, not estimates.

What the Search Console generative-AI reports show

The new reports break out how your pages perform inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, separately from classic blue-link results. That separation matters: a page can rank well and still be invisible in AI answers, or rank modestly and earn citations anyway. The reports are rolling out to a subset of sites first, so don't panic if your property doesn't show them yet.

  • Ranks well, not cited in AI: a GEO gap — the content isn't structured for extraction. Atomic answers and schema fix this.
  • Cited in AI, ranks modestly: protect it — AI Overviews regularly cite pages outside the top 10, and that citation is winnable real estate.
  • Neither: a classic SEO problem first. AI engines lean on traditional crawl and ranking signals; weak fundamentals lose both surfaces.

What the Merchant Center AI performance report shows

The shopping-side equivalent: how your products appear across AI-powered shopping experiences. This is the report to watch as agentic surfaces (AI Mode shopping, Universal Cart) scale up — product visibility there is driven by feed quality, identifier completeness, and schema consistency rather than page content. If products underperform here, audit the feed before the website.

What is Preferred Sources, and why does it matter now?

Preferred Sources lets users mark sites they want to see more of — and since late May 2026 it applies inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, not just classic results. Audience loyalty now has a direct, mechanical AI-visibility payoff. If you have an email list or repeat buyers, asking them to add your site as a preferred source is a legitimate, zero-cost visibility tactic.

What should you do with these reports?

  • Baseline now. Record current AI Overview/AI Mode impressions before you change anything — you can't show progress without a starting line.
  • Track AI visibility as its own KPI line next to rank and clicks, not instead of them. One core update note: after a confirmed core update completes (May 2026's finished June 2), wait about a week before reading trends.
  • Check crawler access — in your CDN as well as your robots.txt. Citations require crawlability — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and now Applebot-Extended (Apple updated its docs in June 2026 to cover Siri/Apple Intelligence crawling). Blocking them blocks the citation. A permissive robots.txt isn't the whole answer, though: your CDN or WAF applies its own crawler defaults ahead of it, and from 15 September 2026 Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent bots by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains and free-tier zones. Verify at the edge too, or you can be blocked in a place your robots.txt never sees.
  • Fix the extraction layer. Question-format headings with direct 40–60 word answers, specific verifiable facts, and complete structured data are what AI surfaces quote.

This is the measurement half of our GEO program — the other half is making the content citable in the first place. If you want a baseline without doing the setup yourself, the free site audit includes a GEO score, and technical SEO covers the crawler-access and schema layer underneath all of it.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the generative-AI reports in Search Console?

They appear as new performance report views covering AI Overviews and AI Mode on Search, plus generative AI in Discover. Google began rolling them out in June 2026 to a subset of sites first, so availability varies by property — if you don't see them yet, the rollout simply hasn't reached you.

Do AI Overviews only cite pages that already rank #1?

No — AI Overviews regularly cite pages outside the top 10. That's the opportunity: a page with modest rankings but well-structured, quotable content can win the citation over higher-ranked competitors. The reverse also happens, which is why measuring AI visibility separately from rank matters.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

For an ecommerce or service business, blocking AI crawlers usually means forfeiting citations your competitors will take. Google now offers a "Search generative AI" control in Search Console settings — mandated by a UK regulator in June 2026 and appearing on some US accounts since July 2026. It covers links and grounding in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover's generative features, and it applies to the whole property; the CMA timeline puts page-level controls in March 2027. It leaves rankings, Merchant Center, and Ads untouched, but if you want AI visibility, the crawlers you want citations from need access.

Is AI visibility worth tracking if AI referral traffic is still small?

Yes — the buyer who asks ChatGPT or AI Mode which product to buy may never click anything, but the answer they get shapes the purchase. Citation share is brand presence at the decision moment. Track it now while your competitors aren't; the baseline compounds.
